Summary
As a Technical Lead / Lead Developer – Batch Applications (UNIX, C, SQL) at Gainwell, this role will support the design, development, testing, implementation, and ongoing support of complex healthcare technology solutions.
- Will serve as a Technical Functional Area Lead (TFAL), providing hands-on technical expertise while also helping lead workstreams, guide developers, support delivery execution, and partner with business, technical, and client-facing stakeholders.
- This role requires a strong technical foundation, sound judgment, clear communication, and the ability to lead small teams through complex application development and support activities.
Your role in our mission
Key responsibilities include:
- Serve as a Technical Functional Area Lead (TFAL) for assigned application areas, batch processes, technical workstreams, or functional modules.
- Lead and support technical teams through the full development lifecycle, including analysis, design, development, unit testing, implementation, defect resolution, and production support.
- Design, code, test, troubleshoot, and maintain complex batch applications using UNIX/Linux, C, SQL, shell scripting, and job stream processing.
- Partner with architects, business analysts, developers, QA teams, operations teams, project managers, and client-facing stakeholders to ensure technical solutions meet business and system requirements.
- Translate functional and business requirements into technical designs, development tasks, implementation plans, and supportable system changes.
- Review technical designs, code, test results, and implementation documentation to ensure quality, maintainability, reusability, and alignment with standards.
- Provide technical guidance, mentorship, and day-to-day direction to less experienced developers and application team members.
- Act as a subject matter expert for assigned applications, batch processes, data flows, interfaces, and system dependencies.
- Support issue triage, root cause analysis, defect resolution, production incidents, and ongoing system maintenance.
- Identify opportunities to improve code quality, batch performance, process efficiency, documentation, and overall system stability.
- Communicate technical risks, dependencies, progress, and recommendations clearly to project leadership, business stakeholders, and client-facing teams.
- Exercise independent judgment to evaluate complex situations, recommend solutions, and drive assigned work to completion.
What we're looking for
- 7+ years of application design, development, maintenance, and programming experience, including strong hands-on experience with:
C programming
UNIX/Linux environments
SQL
Shell scripting
Batch processing
Job scripts / job streams
- 3+ years of technical leadership experience, such as serving as a lead developer, SME, workstream lead, technical coordinator, or Technical Functional Area Lead.
- Experience supporting system design, development, maintenance, modification, testing, implementation, and production support.
- Experience documenting and executing unit test cases, validating results, and supporting defect resolution.
- Ability to analyze complex technical issues, evaluate alternatives, and recommend practical solutions.
- Experience working with cross-functional teams, including architects, developers, business analysts, QA, operations, project managers, and business stakeholders.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to explain technical topics to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Prior healthcare IT, Medicaid, financial systems, claims, eligibility, or similar large-scale government program experience is a plus.
Additional Preferred Experience
- Prior experience in a consulting, client-facing, or delivery-oriented technology environment.
- Ability to operate as a proactive change agent by identifying opportunities for process improvement, code improvement, automation, and delivery standardization.
- Strong executive presence and communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with application teams, support teams, customers, senior leaders, and client stakeholders.
- Proven ability to mentor, motivate, and guide individual contributors while helping create a high-performing technical team.
- Comfortable balancing hands-on development responsibilities with technical leadership, stakeholder communication, and delivery accountability.

The pay range for this position is $100,000 - $120,000 per year, however, the base pay offered may vary depending on geographic region, internal equity, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors.
